Hair Preservation
The early signs of male pattern baldness are recession of hair along the temporal area in front of the ears. If this is occurring, use of Propecia also known as Proscar generic name finasteride will prevent further loss. Minoxidil also known as Rogaine, either in the 2% or 5% dose twice a day will also potentially prevent further loss. Of the two, Proscar in doses of 1 mg a day is the better at preventing the primary cause which is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from destroying the hair follicle. The two also can be used together. A newer drug called Avodart inhibits 90% of DHT whereas finasteride inhibits only 70%. Very limited testing seems to show that it works better.
It is important not to put traction of fine hair that is thinning or to use harsh chemicals that can attack the hair.
There are many herbal and over the counter remedies for preserving or enhancing hair growth. There is no evidence that any of these potions do anything but make money for the people that sell them. Estrogen may play a role in preventing further hair loss by inhibiting DHT.
One thing is certain. The sooner you act to stop hair loss, the more you will retain. This is probably the first real step in physically transitioning.
